The Midnight Beast are very naughty men

Now this was a fun project for sure! I really really loved this one because I got to take people from a live action TV show and design them in a way so they could be transformed in to animatable characters. I went with the E4 show The Midnight Beast (which stars one of my favourite bands, of the same name, as the main characters) and I designed the members of the band as cartoon characters!

Of course before I could begin designing I had to do a lot of research to get myself started (aka I watched every episode twice all over again, which is definitely research of course...)

After staring at their wonderful faces for hours on end I was finally ready to get drawing, so I started out with simply drawing them out in my usual style and observing the unique traits that each member of the band had so I could exaggerate them on their cartoon versions.

I wasn't sure what style to go with right away so before I went any further I did some research in to cartoons with styles that appeal to me for inspiration.

When I was done looking at examples of other people's styles I began working on my own, trying to push their proportions and faces more and more each time to try and make them more interesting.

With a style finally decided on I began focusing on how I could show the larger than life personalities of the 3 band members through expressions and poses. I had a lot of fun coming up with all these silly faces!

Next up was clothes, which involved looking back at my research and taking note of all their individual styles and colour choices.

Just to make sure I had their designs down properly I made these construction sheets just so I would have a set of rules I could follow every time I drew one of them so they'd always look the same.

These are the final designs I came up with in the end!

Just to show they could all work together in one situation I made this promo image of the three of them, sort of like a poster to advertise the cartoon if it ever came to be!
