I'm one of those artists who by default will always draw a character floating in some empty white void, so this project was a fun way to teach myself how to do backgrounds properly!
For the first half of the project I was given already completely lineart (although I did have to tidy up the lines a little as well) and was told to colour it in Photoshop. Admittedly I didn't use Photoshop much at all before this project, but using it here was definitely the kick up the ass I needed to get myself in to using it! I barely even knew where the brush tool was when I started...

I was then told to colour the exact same lineart, except this time it had to be a night time scene. This was actually a really good exercise in colouring and shading and taught me a lot about how drastically you can change a scene just by changing the colour palette a little!
After that Photoshop adventure I was then told to try out Illustrator for the first time ever and create a background from scratch. This desert scene was the result-
It's nothing spectacular, but it's definitely good for a first try!
