An adventure with backgrounds

I'm one of those artists who by default will always draw a character floating in some empty white void, so this project was a fun way to teach myself how to do backgrounds properly!

For the first half of the project I was given already completely lineart (although I did have to tidy up the lines a little as well) and was told to colour it in Photoshop. Admittedly I didn't use Photoshop much at all before this project, but using it here was definitely the kick up the ass I needed to get myself in to using it! I barely even knew where the brush tool was when I started...

Kids Know Best

This was a strange one, but definitely a fun project overall! For this project I had to take a drawing that was drawn by a child from St Gladys school in Bargoed and recreate the character so they could be animateable. 

I worked with Leon Matthews' drawing, which was interesting to say the least!

Cats with... thumbs?

This project was a fun one! I had to take an advert that'd already been made and draw out a storyboard for it as if I was the one who planned it out myself. I was given the freedom to choose whatever advert I wanted, so I went with the classic Cravendale advert "Cats with Thumbs"!

The Slowest Stand-Off

The Glammies is an award ceremony held at the end of every year at my university where students show off their work and win awards in a whole rand of different categories. For 2013 the theme was cowboys and the Wild West!
As first years we had to help create short clips to play between the nominees' work, and I got to help create backgrounds for one particular clip that was a stop-motion showdown between a sloth and a tortoise.
Yes, it really is as epic as it sounds.

The backgrounds were all done traditionally with ink and watercolours, blown up digitally and then printed out again so they could be stuck on cardboard and used in the background of the set.

“Apparently, during the ‘80s, nobody really dressed like Madonna except for Madonna.”

Well, this project was certainly a wild ride! I had to pick a specific era and create characters based on that certain time, so I went with the 80s because honestly, who doesn't love the neon outfits, giant hair and leg warmers?

Cockatiels and Miniature Schnauzers, oh my!

This project was a fun one, especially considering how much I love animals (and drawing them). I had to design 2 characters that would interact, one being a bird and the other a four legged animal of my choice, and since I have both a pet cockatiel and a dog I decided to make them in to animatable characters!

I started with the bird character, who is based on my own cockatiel Jessie (who is a lovely model to work with, by the way).
